TIPS ON HOW TO BEAT INSOMNIA


Insomnia is a sleep disorder which is mostly common amongst adults.
Insomnia is known as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep even when one has the opportunity to do so.


The symptoms of insomnia are:
Waking up too early.
Depression, anxiety, irritability.
You find it difficult to fall asleep at night.
Daytime tiredness.
Not feeling well rested even after sleeping at night.
Ongoing worries about sleep.
You find it difficult to concentrate or even pay attention.
Always waking up at night.


Insomnia can be due to different factors which can be stress from work, school, finances, family etc.
Late night eating can also be a reason for insomnia and this can be as a result of heartburn which can make you feel uncomfortable leading to inability to sleep.
Poor sleep habits is a leading factor of insomnia. Poor sleep habits are: in conducive or uncomfortable sleep environment, irregular bedtime schedule, watching TV late into the night amongst others.

That being said, here are tips to beat insomnia:

Exercise regularly
One of the major benefits of exercise is improved sleep for everyone involved in it. Therefore, it is important you exercise often to get rid of insomnia.
Also, kindly note that you should exercise at least 3 hours before going to bed in order to improve your sleep pattern.


Make your sleep environment comfortable
Most people ignore their sleep environment. Make sure your lightning is good enough for sleep and there is little or no noise around your sleep area.
Your bed and pillow should also feel comfortable enough for you to sleep on.


Do not drink or eat right before going to bed
Eating right before going to bed can lead to discomfort such as:  gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) or heartburn.
Also,  it is very important to avoid eating and drinking right before bedtime. This is  because it can make your symptoms worse.
In addition, drinking a lot of fluids prior to bed can increase your visits to the toilet which can interrupt your sleep.


Reduce Naps
If you find it difficult to sleep at night, you should reduce your nap. This is because napping can affect the quality of your sleep.
Therefore, we encourage you to establish a regular sleep pattern at night in order to beat insomnia.


Stop your alcohol intake and other stimulants
The effects  of alcohol or caffeine can last for several hours and this can disturb your sleep.
However, If you are on medications that act as stimulants, such as decongestants or asthma inhalers, you should ask your doctor when it is best be take them to help reduce any negative effect on your sleep.

Try to reduce stress
There are different relaxation and stress elimination therapy can utilize to reduce stress.
Examples of such are: Meditation, deep breathing techniques amongst others.

Limit your bed activities
Kindly note that your bed is for sleeping and not for work activities or phone calls.
Listening to radio and watching movies can disturb your sleep. Ensure you reduce it.
