GHANA NATIONAL CATHEDRAL PREPARATION UNDERWAY

The Government’s plan to construct a National Cathedral to serve as a non-denominational Christian Worship Center is underway in the Capital of Ghana, Accra.

The National Cathedral was promised by the Akufo-Addo’s administration in 2017, which raised lots of controversies from opposition parties and certain religious leaders as ‘partiality’ to define the Nation’s religious status through Christian Worship. Despite the criticisms, the president defended the decision to proceed to his plans describing the initiative as “priorities among priorities.”

The president was in the United States capital of Washington D.C on February 8, 2019, to launch the fundraising for the building of the cathedral after the State House witnessed the Ghanaian version of the unveiling through which photos revealing the design of the cathedral were disclosed. In attendance were some members of the cathedral planning committee.

The president and the rest of the Ghanaian delegation met with some Christian religious leaders in the United States including evangelical preacher, Pastor Paula White.

Demolition of certain structures to create space for the building has begun; the building of scholarship secretariat around the ridge district was pulled as other structures belonging to certain judges have also been taken out.

The head office of the Passport Office in Accra according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey will be relocated to create more space.

“The Head Office of the Passport Office is soon to be relocated to make way for the construction of the national cathedral. A new property has been allocated to the Ministry to be used as the new Passport Head Office,” Mrs. Ayorkor Botchwey said.

On completion, the Cathedral would become Ghana's Mother Church, where all faiths will converge and worship God. It will also be the residence where Presidents and other dignitaries during thanksgiving services would congregate.
